London Restaurant Guide

1837

68-86 bar & restaurant

68-86 Bar & Restaurant Situated in fashionable South Kensington, 68-86 has been refurbished to give a striking atmosphere whilst remaining very comfortable. Great venue if you have been shopping in nearby Knightsbridge… or for a business lunch.

The Head Chef Lahdi Rouane has been awarded an AA rosette, and he provides great contemporary British cooking. He believes the individual flavours of a dish should compliment rather than complete with each other.

The service is second to none. Discreet but friendly, knowledgeable but unpretentious. 68-86 also has a private area for up to 50 persons, perfect for a party or special occasion.

Alfred

Alfred Alfred offers truly imaginative British cooking from a small but infinitely tempting menu. Starters that caught our eye included scallops in beer batter with black pudding and a pea puree, Glamorgan patties (cheese and leek) with tomato chutney and mustard cream, and whisky-cured Scottish salmon with Michaelmas Salad. Main courses are equally appetising, though I just missed out on the herbed goats cheese filo parcel with spinach and honey roast vegetables - that had tempted more than just me.

However it wasn't difficult to make another choice, and a rib eye of beef with homemade chips, spinach and a red wine sauce was tender, delicious and cooked to perfection. Roast halibut was also a triumph, very fresh and melting in the mouth, and presented with hazelnut dill potato and mustard cream sauce.

Asia de Cuba

Asia De CubaAsia de Cuba is one of those restaurants with a high Wow factor. This is one of the very stylish and modern restaurants of Ian Schrager's equally stylish and modern St Martin's Lane hotel, serving an original fusion of Asian and Latino cuisine from tuna tatare with lime vinaigrette to Foie Gras Tacos. The place throbs with hipness, and the stylish young clientele complete the scene. Start with one of the seemingly thousands of tempting cocktails - particularly strong on rum concoctions - before tucking into any of the oversized dishes meant for sharing.

Assaggi

AssaggiAssaggi was awarded a Michelin star in 2005 and is widely acknowledged as one of the best Italian rsetaurants in London. Whilst dishes on the menu may not be particularly fancy, the quality of the ingredients is the best. The dining room is very low key and like most other Italian restaurants is noisy and rather low key. However don't be fooled - prices are top drawer though the consensus is 'it's worth it'.

Aubergine

AubergineGordon Ramsey may have moved on but the superb standard and quality of the food produced here lives on under the immensely capable and consistent hands of chef William Drabble. The restauant itself is small and intimate, which makes a rather refreshing change from the 'mega' restaurants that have proliferated over the city. The menu is haute cuisine; French food at its best with complex and beautiful food on the plate. There are several set menus, you might want to consider the seven course menu gourmand - there's a price with and without accompanying wines.

Boisdale

BoisdaleThe atmosphere at Boisdale's is masculine and clubby with dark green and lacquer red panelling, dark wood floors and enough tartan to keep a Bay City Roller fan happy. And if the thought of Scottish cuisine means haggis and little else, then pay a visit and prepare to be converted. Where possible, the ingredients used in the dishes are sourced directly from Scotland and the vegetables procured from organic suppliers.

The food is a blend of traditional and modern British cooking with specialities including carpaccio of Rannoch Moor hot smoked wild highland venison with a black truffle dressing, grilled Orkney king scallops, crispy pancetta and braised fennel with saffron beurre blanc, fresh game and fish. The menu also includes the delightful Edwardian idea of savouries such as scotch woodcock and scrambled eggs with black truffles.

Circus

CircusCircus's three glass walls flood the minimalist designed restaurant with light and the overall effect is impressive enough to attract a suitably smart media and finance crowd eager to be seen to spend their cash. The gorgeously glossy basement lounge bar is a dark, sensuous haven for a sneaky morning espresso with the papers or a let-your-hair-down dry martini after work. Upstairs, chef Richard Lee's cooking is as stylishly simple as the decor - great ingredients meet classic techniques and inventive touches.

    Tom Aikens

Tom AtkinsThis would have to be one of the slickest, sleekest and best restaurants you will ever have the experience to dine in. Tom Aiken's has won just about every single restaurant award going and you'll find out why when you go. The food is, quite simply and without hesitation, sublime. Immaculately presented dishes, which see multiple flavours jostle for attention despite simple menu descriptions, are just one part of the beautiful choreography of this dining experience.

The service is always well-drilled & never less than ‘discreet’. Unsurprisingly, the experience does not come cheap but given the quality of the food, it's fantastic value.

    Zuma

ZumaZuma offers a sophisticated twist on the traditional Japanese izakaya-style of informal eating and dining and has been often described as "the new Nobu". The design of the restaurant is quite minimal with a touch of opulence - glass, steel, teak and granite - a style that suits the cuisine perfectly. Which means that a meal there ceases to be simply that and becomes a spectacular experience. Like all Japanese restaurants the menu is huge and varied. However there are no weaknesses at all and everything is as close to perfect as it is reasonable to expect.

If you fancy just a drink there is a lounge and sake bar offering more than 20 types of sake as well as cocktails. There's also a sushi counter if you are dropping in on a whim.
